最近たくさんのメーリングリストに入るようになった．これまではメルマガか，もしくはFixされたグループの連絡用ばっかりだったのだが，最近のはいわゆるコミュニティ関係で，しかも範囲が決まっていないというか，人がどんどん増える．確かにMLは手軽に作れて便利である．しかし，後者のようなコミュニティを運営するための装置としては全く向いていないと個人的には思う．理由は単純で，後から入ってきた人がコミュニティにコミットするための心理的障壁が大きすぎるから．とあるML＝コミュニティの全てを把握するには，原則的にはそこで行われたすべてのメールのやり取りを見ればよいし，たいていのMLは過去ログという形でそれを保存・公開しているわけだが，その過去ログは後入りの新人にとっては「私がそこに存在していなかった時代の記録」でしかなく，今後何かわからないことがあったらまずその記録をひもとく必要がある．要するに，後入りにとってはいついかなる場合においても後入りであることを自覚させられてしまう．一方で生え抜きの人にはそんな屈託はなくて，自分の場として自由に振る舞うことができる．その差は大きいし埋まりようがない．気にしない人もいるだろうが気にする人もいる．なんというか，コミュニティという言葉から想像を受けるような平等さがMLからは感じにくい．ではWeb上で全部やるモデルはどうか．（ここではCMSのような高度な掲示板風システムやWeblogサイトの連合，を想定）過去ログは過去ログとして同じようにあるのだが，現在の議論と過去の議論が全く同じ形式で表示されるために，過去ログを過去ログとして見なくてもいいしそのために「後入り感」はだいぶ減少する．それとて完全ではない（し無理して平等にする必要もないかもしれない）けれども，オープンコミュニティにはオープンコミュニティなりの器を用意してやらないとうまく運営できないなあ，と思う．

余談．村上春樹と河合隼雄の対談で，日本の共同体は個々人の事情を顧みずに共同体の寄与度でその人の価値を決めがちだという話があった．生活に余裕のある人が週5でボランティアするのと，仕事の合間になんとか週1で，という人がいた場合の評価は？と．この対比だけでは類型的すぎるけれども，絶対量で比較してしまうきらいがあることは確か．
