TrackBackは未来のリンク

TrackBackの効用を述べてみる．自明だったらすみません．はじめてTrackBackの概念を知ったときには，これはWebコミュニケーションの新しい形態かなと大いに期待していたのだが，それから数ヶ月たったいまもTrackBackを有効利用して議論しているサイトというものにお目にかからない（あったら教えてください）．それにはいろいろな理由があるだろう．日本人のメンタリティとか日記とWeblogの違いとか．その話はなるべく避けたいので避けることにして，議論エンジンとしての役割以外にTrackBackがなし得るものとは何であろうか．（ちなみにここではTrackBackという言葉をReferer追跡を含めた「逆リンク」の意味で使っています）
普通のリンクと比較して考えると，書き手が自分のコンテンツAに他サイトのコンテンツBへのリンクを張る，これはいたって普通の行動である．このとき，AとBの「新しさ」を比較すると必ずA＞Bとなる（あたりまえだ．すでに存在するBを読んでAが書かれるのだから）．したがってここでのリンクは時間的には過去の方向を向く．TrackBackはその逆になる．AからBへPingを発行すると，Bのシステムはそれを感知してBからAへのリンクを張る．鮮度はA＞Bであるから，TrackBackによるリンクは未来の方向を向くことになる．さて，このようにリンクに時間的な相対関係の意味を付加できるとなると何が起こるか．究極のサーチエンジンだと思われているgoogleは，現在の，言い換えればある1時点でのリンク構造解析を行って検索（というかスコアリング）に反映させている．そこに相対的時間情報が加われば．．．空間が3次元から4次元になったようなもので，そこで得られる検索結果は大きく変わるだろう．少なくともトレンド分析なんかは難しくないはず．もちろん現在でもやってやれないことはないが，そのためには巨大な時系列アーカイブが必要になる．もう1つ，時間の話をしなくてもリンク構造のレベルでTrackBackは有用である．自分のページがリンクで指されているということは普通のリンクだけでは知りようがない．それを知るにはWeb全体をクローリングしないといけなくて，いまの検索エンジンはそれをやっている．しかしこれもTrackBackがあれば全体を集めてくる必要はなくて，自分を中心として近所をまわるだけでリンク関係は見えてくる．こういった小規模の検索サービスというのは需要があるはず．なんせgoogleのキャッシュが完全に更新されるには3ヶ月もかかるのだ．時空を自由に行き来することのできるTrackBackの存在によって，まだまだ勝負の余地はある．

ここで重要なのは，TrackBackの仕組みをWeblog以外に広めるだけではなくて，そうやって生成されるリンクを区別できるようにしておくことだ．普通のリンクとTrackBackをメタデータのレベルで分けておく，それだけでWebの見通しはずっと良くなるはずであるし，実のところセマンティックウェブというのはそれだけでも十分ではないかという気がしている．
